The Luckiest Man In the Land (2/2/22)
He sat in a chair with not much to do,
as words filled his head not many just a few.
He dreamt of a time he knew oh so well,
and started to think of a story to tell.
They met in the summer of eighty-four,
both of them worked at an old department store.
It took some time to make their first date,
many would say, it was well worth the wait.
Fast forward six years to the fifteenth of September,
this is a day they will long remember.
Over the threshold and into the house,
he happily carried his brand-new spouse.
Off they went to faraway lands,
there were forests, mountains and beaches of white sands.
Still, something was missing their lives not complete,
there was more to come some new people to meet.
In just a short while the good news would spread,
a child would be born with nothing to dread.
Little did they know how quickly he would come,
up before dawn and the rise of the sun.
The house was not right, it was time to relocate,
for before they knew it there will be another birth date.
They finally found a good home for their new son,
but they could not rest for there was still work to be done.
Off to the store where there should be no stress,
don't look now mom oh what a mess!
On to the ball field, what's that loud roar?
Oh, by gosh, by golly his hand is stuck in the door.
They counted the days and began to wonder,
how could they not know, seven eleven is a very lucky number.
The radio played an old Jim Croce song,
perhaps a sign that nothing would go wrong.
All was quiet when they talked to their neighbor,
don't look now she is scribbling crayon on their new wall paper.
Where are the vegetables that were placed on her plate?
Why in the powder room well passed their date.
More good news did come; it was a hot Father's Day,
when they learned there was a third fast on the way.
It was a bright and sunny when she would arrive.
now they were complete a happy family of five.
A box she did carry and would not put away,
until a fine priest said all was ok.
The times that they strolled along down the street,
she had a kind word for all she would greet.
The paintings and poems and championship games,
covered their walls like a great hall of fame.
And just when it all seemed it could not get any better,
along came a friend he was spunky and fun a real go-getter.
They sacrificed, saved and lived by their means,
one day they were able to purchase the house of their dreams.
The years passed quickly like a fast-blowing breeze,
one child moved south another flew over seas.
Now empty nesters at home and alone,
this was the plan when their children had grown.
But if ever they are in need of a place to stay,
home is only a phone call away.
He awoke in his chair; his dreams had come true,
the words still remembered he'll share them with you:
"Here is the luckiest man in the land,
for he married a lovely young lady - her name is Diane".
